Mac Installation Q3F 2 has been tested on Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. Max OS X is recommended for stability and memory usage. If you are using one of these operating systems, have the latest system version installed and have an upto-date installation of Quake 3, then Q3F 2 will work for you! The first thing to check is that you have the latest Quake 3 Arena Point Release installed. Before attempting to run Q3F 2, you should start Quake 3 without any special options. Bring down the console (by hitting the tilde [`] key) and check the version installed. You can always get the latest point release for all operating systems from ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/mac. |

You may also run in to problems if you've ever installed any updates or patches that aren't from id Software - for example a CD-Hack that changes the Quake 3 Arena executable. If you have made a MacQuake3Parms.txt file to run another mod or previous version of Q3F 2, you should remove or modify this accordingly too. Downloading, Installing and Running Q3F 2 on a Macintosh The latest version of Q3F is always available from the downloads page at www.q3f.com. To install Q3F you should first download the latest full ZIP file and all subsequent updates. The full zip contains the base q3f2 folder, and this must be placed inside your Quake 3 Arena folder. Make sure all following Q3F 2 PK3 updates (files that end with the extention PK3) are located in the base q3f2 directory inside your Quake 3 Arena folder too. You can run Q3F 2 in several different ways on a Macintosh. The easiest way is to launch Quake 3 Arena and choose Q3F 2 from the Mods menu. If you are running Mac OS X and you like using a server browser such as Only Mortal simply double click on a Q3F 2 server in your games list to launch Quake 3 Arena and play. It is also possible to start Q3F 2 from the Terminal. You will need to use the "/+set fs_game q3f2" argument to do this. Arguments can also be used through Only Mortal under Preferences if they are required. Q3F 2 requires a hunkmegs value of 96 or above. This means the "com_hunkmegs" in your baseq3 and q3f2 CFG files must have a value of at least 96. You can set this value using the startup argument "/+set com_hunkmegs 96" or with the "/seta com_hunkmegs 96" command in game. If you are running OS9, be sure that your Quake 3 application has at least 128,000k of RAM allocated to it. You will find that your ideal hunkmegs and memory allocation settings will come through tweaking. If you only have 128 megs of physical RAM, making Q3F 2 run at an acceptable level of stability will be tricky. Tip: If you have more RAM, do not give the Quake 3 application all of the available memory, but still try to maintain a ratio of roughly 2:3 in terms of hunkmegs:preferred memory setting. The main reason Quake 3 crashes in OS9 is due to the way memory is handled.
